What Takes Decades to Grow Can Disappear in an Afternoon

There is something profoundly different about seeing a forest fire with your own eyes.

From a distance, fire is a number on a map. A hotspot. A red dot on a satellite image. A few hectares recorded in an incident report.

But standing close to it is different.

You feel the heat before you fully see the flames. Smoke hangs heavily in the air. The forest that normally surrounds you with the sounds of insects, birds and moving leaves suddenly feels frighteningly vulnerable.

And somewhere between the smoke, the exhausted faces of the people trying to contain the fire, and the trees standing in its path, a simple thought becomes impossible to ignore:

How long did it take for this forest to become a forest?

A tree does not appear overnight.

It begins quietly as a seed, a fragile shoot, then a sapling struggling for sunlight among thousands of others. It survives floods and droughts, insects and disease, storms and changing seasons. Year after year, it grows.

Some trees require decades before they reach the canopy.

A functioning forest requires even longer.

Roots establish themselves beneath the soil. Wildlife returns. Seeds travel. Water moves through the landscape. Carbon accumulates in trunks, branches, roots and, in peatlands, deep beneath our feet.

What we casually call “forest” is actually the result of decades, sometimes centuries, of survival.

And yet what nature spends generations building can be destroyed remarkably quickly.

When Standing Forest Has No Economic Value

It would be easy to reduce forest destruction to a simple story of good and bad.

Reality is more difficult.

Across many tropical landscapes, forests exist alongside communities seeking livelihoods, businesses seeking returns, governments pursuing development and landowners trying to make economically rational decisions.

The uncomfortable reality is that a standing forest has historically struggled to compete economically with what comes after it.

Cut the trees, and timber has a price.

Clear the land, and crops can have a price.

Convert it, mine it, cultivate it or develop it, and suddenly the land produces something that conventional markets know how to value.

But leave the forest standing?

For generations, many of the things it produces, stored carbon, clean water, biodiversity, climate regulation and habitat , have carried enormous value to society while generating remarkably little direct economic return to the people responsible for protecting them.

That imbalance matters.

Because conservation cannot rely indefinitely on asking people to sacrifice economic opportunity simply because protecting nature is the right thing to do.

Standing forests need an economy too.

The Economics of Keeping a Tree Alive

This is where carbon finance can change the equation.

At its simplest, forest carbon finance recognizes something that conventional economics has historically overlooked: there is measurable economic value in not destroying a forest.

A living tree stores carbon.

A protected forest continues storing it.

A restored forest can absorb more of it.

A peatland kept wet prevents enormous stores of carbon accumulated over centuries from being released into the atmosphere.

Through credible carbon projects, protecting those ecosystems can therefore generate an economic return.

That return can help finance forest patrols, fire prevention and suppression, community programmes, biodiversity monitoring, restoration, scientific measurement and the people required to manage a landscape year after year.

This does not mean putting a price tag on nature and pretending that money captures everything a forest represents.

It does not.

An Orangutan cannot be reduced to a tonne of carbon. Neither can a hornbill, a river, a centuries-old tree or the relationship between a community and the land surrounding it.

Carbon finance simply provides something conservation has desperately needed:

a mechanism through which keeping nature alive can compete economically with destroying it.

Fire Changes the Perspective

Standing near a forest fire makes these ideas considerably less theoretical.

You stop thinking about carbon only as tonnes of CO₂e in a spreadsheet.

You see trees.

You see habitat.

You see years of growth standing only metres away from flames.

You see people carrying hoses and searching for water, fighting against heat and exhaustion to protect something that cannot simply be reconstructed next month.

And you understand the asymmetry.

Destruction can happen in hours. Recovery is measured in years and decades.

That is why protecting existing forests matters just as much as planting new trees.

Planting is important. Restoration is essential.

But we should never allow the promise that we can plant trees tomorrow to become an excuse for losing mature forests today.

A seedling planted this year cannot instantly replace a tree that has spent fifty years storing carbon, providing habitat and becoming part of an ecosystem.

Nature does not operate on our quarterly reporting cycles.

What Are We Really Protecting?

Perhaps that is the thought I carried home most strongly from the project site.

When we protect a forest, we are not protecting something static.

We are protecting time.

The years contained inside every trunk.

The generations required for an ecosystem to form.

The carbon accumulated slowly in vegetation and soil.

The habitat that species have depended upon long before we arrived.

And the possibility that these landscapes will still exist for generations who have not yet been born.

It takes decades to grow a forest.

It can take only an afternoon to lose one.

So when economic pressure makes destruction tempting, our responsibility is not simply to say “do not cut the forest.”

We must create a credible alternative.

One where forests can remain standing.

Where communities can prosper alongside them.

Where protecting carbon, biodiversity and ecosystems creates economic value rather than economic sacrifice.

And where, one day, keeping a tree alive becomes at least as valuable as cutting it down.

Because perhaps the greatest success of carbon finance will not ultimately be measured by how many credits the world trades.

It will be measured by something much simpler:

how much forest is still standing when the next generation arrives.
