South Barito Kapuas Forest Carbon Project Completes Validation and Verification, Advancing Toward VCS Credit Issuance
Independent audit by RINA Services S.p.A. confirms approximately 4 million VCUs from the blended 2022–2025 vintages. This milestone further strengthens the South Barito Kapuas (“SBK”) Project’s independent quality credentials. As previously announced in January 2026, the SBK Project was assigned a BeZero Carbon ex ante Rating of A.pre, with Very Low project execution risk and an ‘aaa’ Additionality score. Together, these independent assessments reflect strong confidence in the project’s emissions reduction rationale, implementation readiness, and overall integrity.
Jakarta, Indonesia — Neo Terra Resources Pte. Ltd. (“Neo Terra”), the strategic consultant behind the SBK Project, (VCS4782), is pleased to announce the successful completion of both validation and verification by an accredited Validation and Verification Body (“VVB”). The SBK Project is managed and financially supported by Neo Terra, reflecting the company’s long-term commitment to advancing highintegrity forest carbon projects in Indonesia. Validation was completed in February 2025, followed by verification in May 2026, both conducted by RINA Services S.p.A (RINA), a globally recognized and Verra-accredited VVB. The verification process confirmed the generation of approximately 4 million Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) from a blended 2022–2025 vintages — a result of the project’s sustained efforts to prevent deforestation and ecosystem degradation across 39,835 hectares of peatland and dryland forest in the South Barito and Kapuas regencies of Central Kalimantan, Indonesia.
“The completion of validation and verification by RINA marks a defining milestone for the South Barito Kapuas Project and for Neo Terra’s long-term commitment to developing high-integrity forest carbon projects in Indonesia. This achievement reflects years of rigorous field work, scientific discipline, and close collaboration with PT Nusantara Raya Solusi as the project proponent. As we advance toward credit issuance, Neo Terra remains committed to delivering measurable climate impact with transparency, integrity, and respect for local communities and ecosystems.” — Mayang Pratiwi, CEO of SBK Project
“The completion of validation and verification by RINA Services represents an important step in the South Barito Kapuas Project’s pathway toward carbon credit issuance. Our assessment was conducted in accordance with the applicable validation and verification requirements, based on the documentation, evidence, and site-level information made available during the audit process.” The project now awaits registration and issuance by VERRA.” — Alok Kumar, Head of India Certification, RINA Services S.p.A.
About the South Barito Kapuas Carbon Project
Initiated in September 2022, the South Barito Kapuas Project (VCS4782) encompasses 39,835 hectares of peatland and dryland forest in the South Barito and Kapuas regencies of Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. The project is designed to prevent deforestation and ecosystem degradation through a combination of peatland rewetting, hydrological restoration, fire prevention, and sustainable livelihood programmes.
The project is situated in a region that has experienced significant historical deforestation pressure, making the protection of these landscapes both ecologically critical and carbon-significant. Beyond its climate impact, the project supports social and economic opportunities for more than 15,000 people across 10 villages surrounding the forest area.
Next Steps Toward Credit Issuance
Following the completion of verification, the SBK project will proceed through Verra’s formal review process as the next stage toward credit issuance under the Verified Carbon Standard (VCS). The project is also progressing through the final stages of authorisation with the Indonesian Government, pursuant to the memorandum of understanding between Verra and Indonesia.
PT NRS wishes to be transparent that the VCUs referenced in this announcement are subject to Verra’s review and are not yet issued credits. The project team is committed to completing this final phase with the same level of rigor that has characterized the project to date.
